A DRINK-DRIVER so drunk he could ‘hardly stand up’ has been spared jail.

Javed Hussein, 37, of Wadham Road, Hilsea, put people ‘at risk of death or serious injury' in a crash on July 12 in Portsmouth.

At Portsmouth Magistrates' Court he admitted careless driving in Goldsmith Avenue, failing to co-operate with a roadside breath test and failing to stop.

District judge Gary Lucie convicted him of drink-driving at a trial.

A breath test revealed he 63 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The limit is 35.

Hussein admitted failing to provide a specimen of breath at a police station on June 10 last year.

Judge Lucie imposed an 18-week jail term suspended for a year with a three-year ban.

He must pay a £115 surcharge and £620 costs, and complete a drink-impaired drivers’ course and 15 days’ rehabilitation activities.

Hussein has stopped drinking and his father is unwell.
