Andy Cannon reveals extent of injury with fears of Portsmouth setback in MK Dons win

The Pompey midfielder has confirmed he’s not expecting another spell on the sidelines after making a goalscoring return to the starting XI against MK Dons.

Cannon was making a comeback from three weeks out with a glute injury at Fratton Park last night.

The 23-year-old has been missed in that time, with his attacking instincts making him a perfect fit for the number 10 position in Kenny Jackett’s preferred 4-2-3-1 formation.

Cannon did require lengthy first-half treatment after a challenge, and the fear was it was the end of his night as he hobbled to the touchline.

The former Rochdale man explained the issue was unrelated to the problem which has limited his involvement of late, however.

Cannon said: ‘It’s fine. It felt worse when the fella followed through on my leg.

‘It wasn’t anything to do with the recent injury, though. The player just followed through and was on my leg.

‘So I’ve got a stud mark all down my leg, but it’s nothing really. It’s clattering into a tackle.

‘I’m fine with that, though, just ice it and get on.’

Cannon was full of praise for the test provided by an MK Dons side who were unbeaten in five games going into last night’s showdown.

Their passing game meant that there was plenty of running to be done by the Pompey man as he shook off the ring rust.

He added: ‘They are a very good side.

‘It might sound a bit stupid, but they play a bit like Manchester City.

‘It was a bit confusing at times, to be honest, with the full-backs going into midfield.

‘There must be reasons they are where they are, but looking at the league table and how they play I can’t see it.

‘A lot of teams are going to struggle against them and they obviously work a lot on playing out.

‘If they are picking up results and playing football it makes it a great result to beat them.’
