Darren Ferguson has admitted Peterborough would have ‘big interest’ in Pompey target Sammi Szmodics if he is available.

The Blues have made enquiries with Bristol City over the midfielder’s availability.

Szmodics has endured a difficult period since arriving at Ashton Gate from Colchester last summer, making only four appearances.

He was sent out on loan to Peterborough in January and scored four goals in 10 appearances before the 2019-20 season was curtailed amid the Covid-19 outbreak.

Szmodics was omitted from the Robins’ squad for their 2-0 Carabao Cup victory over Exeter, however, and may be surplus to requirements once again.

Pompey would be keen to sign the 24-year-old ahead of a renewed League One promotion push – although Championship clubs are interested.

However, that won't stop Peterborough from trying to prise him back to London Road.

Speaking to the Peterborough Telegraph after the Posh's defeat to Cheltenham on Saturday, Ferguson said. ‘There is nothing for me to say about Sammie.

‘He was here and did well last season and everyone is aware he’s a player who would be of big interest to us if he was available, but nothing has changed as far as I’m concerned.

‘I didn’t know anything about him not being in Bristol City’s squad.’
